This tool transforms Comma Separated Values (CSV) data into nice evenly aligned text columns of fixed width. As CSV files are commonly used for exporting, storing, and sharing data, it has a strict data format, with specific data separation and quoting rules. This strict data format makes it inconvenient to work with CSV files directly. Each comma-separated field can be of different length, making it easy to lose track of which field belongs to which column. To make the CSV data easier to visualize and work with, you can use our program to convert it into a neat text format. The tool finds the maximum length of each CSV column and then right-pads each value with the appropriate number of spaces so that all text columns are aligned evenly. Each column can also have a name and it can be extracted from the header row of the CSV file. If you don't need the headers, you can disable them via the "Headers as Column Names" option. You can also delete empty CSV rows using the "Exclude Empty Lines" option. If the input CSV has a non-standard format (non-comma-separated), you can specify the new delimiter in the options. For absolute precision, you can also specify the symbol used for field quoting and the symbol used for comments to filter out unnecessary information and avoid converting them into output columns. In this example, we transform a CSV file that uses the standard comma as a field separator into neatly formatted text columns. The CSV contains website traffic data, where each line represents a website's page with total visits and unique visitors. Due to the varying lengths of page names, the fields on each line are shifted, making it difficult to read and edit. Therefore, we convert the CSV into columns, resulting in perfectly aligned vertical data that makes it easy to compare traffic on different pages.
In this example, a comma-separated CSV file containing information about various animals is converted into visually appealing data columns. The CSV file starts with headers on the first line, but since it's obvious what the data in each column means, we discard the headers and convert only the data fields. As a result, we obtain three evenly aligned columns: the first one prints the animal's name, the second one shows the habitat, and the third one tells the animal's dietary preference.
In this example, we make CSV flight information much more readable by transforming it into a clear, vertically formatted data structure with four columns. The first column displays the flight number, the second shows the departure city, the third prints the arrival city, and the fourth reflects the airline. The tool also removes empty CSV lines that were accidentally left in the file by the previous data scientist, and it ignores the last line starting with the "#" symbol, which is the comment symbol. Additionally, it makes sure the input is correctly parsed as it uses an unusual input CSV field separator, which is a semicolon ";".
